4 at a time Flying Geese

4 at a time Flying Geese

No waste method

I've recently found a love for the classic flying geese block. Making them 4 at a time is not only efficient with time, but also with fabric. Plus you don't have to work with bias edges, hooray! This no waste method is a win-win.

Step 1

Cut your squares. You'll need 1 larger square and 4 smaller squares to make your 4 flying geese. Use the size chart below to figure out the sizes you need.

Some things to note:
- Your larger square will become the body of your goose (middle larger triangle)
- your smaller squares will become the wings of your goose (corner triangles)
- All geese are twice as wide as they are high

Step 2

Draw diagonal lines across the wrong side of your 4 smaller squares. I use a pencil, but you can use an ink pen or chalk, these lines won't be visible once the blocks are done. Lay 2 of your small squares onto the large square, right sides together. The diagonal lines you draw should go from corner to corner and overlap in the middle. Pin if preferred.

Step 3

Sew on both sides of the line with a 1/4" seam. Cut along the drawn line to divide into 2 pieces.

Step 4

Press the triangles of the smaller squares up to create heart-shaped blocks.

Step 5

Take each of the heart shaped blocks and lay your remaining 2 squares on top, right sides together. The diagonal should meet at the bottom point and come up just between the points of the heart shaped triangles at the top. Pin if preferred.

Step 6

Sew on both sides of the line with a 1/4" seam. Cut along the drawn line to divide into 2 pieces.

Step 7

Press the triangles out to create the flying geese shaped block! Trim to finished size, maintaining the 1/4" seam allowance at the point of the geese and keeping the point centered. The corner triangle pieces of your geese block should hit right at the bottom corners of the block. I have a quick trimming geese tutorial on my Instagram highlights too!

And now you're done! Make as many flying geese as your little heart desires. Here's a couple of my favorite quilts I've made with this technique. Geese work well in so many quilts and have a traditional flair with a modern twist. Have fun and get funky with your flying geese quilts!
